Bioresources Collection and Research Center (BCRC), Taiwan joins GBRCN
The Bioresources Collection and Research Center (BCRC) is part of the Food Industry Research and Development Institute (FIRDI), Hsinchu, Taiwan and is registered with the World Data Centre for Microorganisms (WDCM59). FIRDI is a non-profit legal entity established in 1965 with financial support from the Canners' Association of Taiwan,CIECD (Council for International Economic Cooperation and Development) and JCRR (Joint Commission on Rural Reconstruction). BCRC holds over 11000 strains of microorganisms and is a semi-governmental supported collection with its main sponsors being Ministry of Economic Affairs, Council of Agriculture, Intellectual Property Office, National Health Research Institute and the National Science of Council. The Director, Dr Gwo-Fang Yuan and researcher and biosecurity expert, Dr Yu-Fen Chen have been closely following the GBRCN Demonstration Project and were keen to join. We are pleased to announce that an agreement was entered into between FIRDI and the GBRCN Secretariat, Germany represented by DSMZ.
BCRC/FIRDI is the first GBRCN Cooperating Partner and has agreed to provide financial support and contribute to outputs of the BMBF funded GBRCN demonstration project. BCRC/FIRDI will deliver input to the GBRCN work package on common approaches to implement agreed principles on biosafety, biosecurity, risk assessment, ownership and management of IP, enforced by existing national, regional and global legislation. In particularly this will be on the topic biosecurity, specifically milestone MS3.5 Code of conduct on biosecurity. They will also contribute to other work packages deliverables and milestones by commenting on developed documentation and model practices as outlined in the GBRCN project road map. BCRC/FIRDI has agreed to provide the OECD Best Practice implementation self-assessment for milestone MS2.5: Completion of BRC assessment of impact of implementing best practice.
